Not Another Summer Playlist

St. Jane Co is launching its first wave of culture and news blogs with a post from our very own Jade Artherhults. Jade is a journalism student at West Virginia University and a radio intern at West Virginia Public Broadcasting. If you'd like to see a certain subject tackled on the blog, leave a comment or let us know via Twitter at @StJaneCo.

With the official start of summer a week away (even though the temps have made it feel like it’s been here for months), I thought I would make my St. Jane Co. debut with a good old summer playlist, because who doesn’t love playlists? I know I sure do.

For my playlist, I was inspired a lot by catchy, dreamy tunes. Tunes that you can put on while you’re hanging out in the backyard with your friends or while you’re at your favorite local swimming hole, etc etc.

So, let’s get started, shall we?

1.     “Coastal Love” – Honne

This is a fairly new song that I discovered thanks to my pal Joni, from A Change of Tune on West Virginia Public Broadcasting. It’s from the duo’s May 1st EP release titled “Coastal Love – EP”. It’s ridiculously catchy and definitely deserves to be spread far and wide.

2.     “Summertime Clothes” – Animal Collective

Do you really have a summer playlist if it doesn’t include Animal Collective? (Hint: The answer is NO!). This song describes pretty much every summer for me from junior high and early high school. You know, when you’re old enough to stay home by yourself, but too young to drive and get a job. Which resulted in some super late nights lying in my bed, probably wishing I knew this song so it could be my summer anthem.

3.     “Mind Mischief” – Tame Impala
I would say Tame Impala is one of my top ten all time favorite groups. As soon as I first heard them, they were all I listened to for a few weeks straight. When you hear this tune, you’ll understand why. Also, they’re pretty badass because their singer, Kevin Parker, sounds a hell of a lot like John Lennon. Don’t believe me? Just listen and find out for yourself.

4.     “Feel It All Around” – Washed Out
Even though this band’s name probably doesn’t look familiar, I can pretty much guarantee you’ve heard this song before. Where? Portlandia! I always loved the intro song and when my friend Haley got Washed Out’s vinyl and I heard the song start, I was like, “Whaaat!” Turns out they are a pretty amazing band. I can totally see why Carrie and Fred chose them for the Portlandia intro song.

5.     “Shut Up and Dance” – Walk the Moon
You didn’t think I would make a summer playlist and not include at least one chart-topping hit, did you? I dare you to listen to this song and not get it stuck in your head. I’m willing to bet all my money (which, fair warning, isn’t much) that you can’t. So how about you just “SHUT UP AND DANCE WITH ME!”

If you like what you see here, check out the full playlist below. Which includes some Wavves, alt-J and a ton of other great artists that deserve way more recognition than they're given.
